There is no homebrew supply store within 100 miles of my backwoods
village.
Does anyone which online supplier is closest to Louisiana? Most of the
shipping charges I have found make homebrewing too expensive.

You didn't mention where in LA you live, but try this:

Beer Box
1401 Old Spanish Trail, Slidell, LA 70458
map | driving directions

phone: (985) 649-0470

Specialties:

* Beer & Wine Making Kits & Supplies

Additional Information:
Keg Beer Wine Liquor, Daiquiri Champagne Mixed Drinks, Homebrew Supplies

There does seem to be a dearth of homebrew shops in LA. There are some in
AR (North Little Rock) and TX.

I didn't ferret out every possibility, but try Google, Ask.com,
Dogpile.com and BigYellow.com (phone directory).

You may have to buy in quantity to get concessions on prices and shipping.
UPS isn't *that* expensive though...although I don't know how the terms
"cheap" and "expensive" fit in your personal financial situation.

If you're looking at home brewing to be cheaper than
Bud/Miller/Coors/PBR/Black Label/Schlitz, well, it ain't gonna happen.
What you *do* get is a fun hobby that gives you a useful product [that
may be] tailored to your personal tastes.

Try www.austinhomebrew.com. Their shipping is 5$ max I believe. They are
pretty close to you too if you order liquid yeast and such.

LOL, that's where the "tailored to your personal tastes" comes in.
