Hi, I've got a small issue I haven't had before. Started a red ale last
night and checked the carboy this morning and there's beer bubbling up
into the airlock and seeping out the top a little bit. It's not a mess
- not shooting out or anything, just seeping. And also seeping a very
tiny bit out of the whole in the stopper around, oozing out around the
air lock stem where it goes into the stopper.
So, is this a problem? If beer is seeping out of the top of the airlock
(oozing out from under the cap) does it mean that air is getting in?
I think the reason this is happening (when it never has before) is that
I filled the carboy closer to the top than I ever have.
It can happen and is more likely to happen with a large starter or
pitching onto an already established yeast cake but it can happen with
any beer. Get yourself a blowoff tube in place of your airlock. No risk
of infection as long as it's gassing out. When things calm down then go
back to the airlock.
