We live in California and purchased our mobile home approximately 7
years ago. It has a cabana (additional room that has been added to the
main unit.) Recently the State of California did an inspection and
said the cabana was built without a permit and is illegal.
We had no clue about this when we purchased the home! Has anyone else
gone through this in Ca.? We're supposed to get it re-inspected and
may be able to keep it if we can get a permit for it and if the wiring
is inspected.
Would the person who sold it to us be legally responsible?
We are disabled and would really appreciate any advice that anyone
could give us, thanks.

I went through something like this in Florida and would
suggest you deal with the inspector by asking, "What
must I do to comply." Then start doing it.
Contact the person who sold you the home. Expect a B.S.
reply like they don't know nothing to they bought it
that way, but you just might get something useful such
as they had permission from the park, or they applied
for a permit, were inspected and thought they were done
with the process. Might be able to put you in touch with
whoever did the work.
If you have to tear it down, you might want to speak to
a lawyer. On the other hand there might be seven years
of back taxes you skipped, it might be worth tearing it
down by now. Look into all sides of the issue before you
make a move.

Another thought, in Florida extensions are offered by
the manufactures of the home. If so it is part of the
structure no matter when added and does not need a
permit because HUD has ok'd it. Not to be taken as a
substitute for legal advice. BobP
What was built is called a California Room, and does indeed require a
permit. Apparently, someone boot-legged this addition quite some time ago.
Likewise, it seems that you possibly purchased the home from a 'for sale by
owner', for if a dealer/real estate agent was involved, am Escrow would have
been required and this non-permitted structured would have been caught.
The seller may still be responsible, all depending on how it was originally
sold. Likewise, the statues of limitations may have run out. Check with an
attorney to find your rights.
Yet, all this may take is simply getting a permit now from your city,
provided the rooms was built to code to begin with. For example, a
California Room requires 50% windows, just for one thing. Check with the
city, you are going to need a permit one way or another.

Just tell them you are an illegal immigrant and they will leave you alone.

I would get legal advice.
It would not be the first time "the Man" tries to B.S. the citizenry.

"In the future you may be here, but will your dreams?"
I just did all the skirting in my mobile home these last two days. It wasn't
to hard either. I used the treateed ply-wood, culked everything and the
insulation(R-11). So I can't wait to see the heat bill lower! Has anyone
else done their own skirting?

I did mine using the vinyl skirting kit provided by the dealer. It was
a pain because we have high winds around here that liked to blow it
apart even after the job was done.
It was only recently that I noticed the paperwork said "vinyl
skirting, installed" was part of the agreement. Argh!
