I've just installed smoke detectors for a customer - 8 Firex
interconnected - 2 floors plus attic and cellar. 150 year old house - lots
of fishing, horse hair plaster and split lath....

Now he wants to add a dialer - if the detectors activate, he wants it to
dial a pre-programmed number.

Does anyone know of an add-on box that will do this?

Thanks in advance.

You will need a means of connecting a dialer to the smoke detectors. Firex
makes a model 499 relay which connects to the 110VAC supply and to the 9V
interconnection trigger lead at one of the detectors.

The relay output can then be connected to a dialer which dials from 1 to 8
telephone numbers (depending on the model) and plays your prerecorded
message. I carry several dialer models, including Visonic and USP. If
you're in the trade you can buy them wholesale at your regular supplier but
help yourself to the information anyway.

The down side to using the relay is it's not UL listed for use with a dialer
or alarm system. There's no way to supervise the smokes or the relay which
is a code requirement. Also, if there is a power failure the relay will not
function. Furthermore, these dialers are not UL listed for the purpose of
monitoring a fire alarm.

If US code compliance is not an issue use your own judgment in determining
whether to implement this.

Robert
